Climate change, human impacts, and the resilience of coral reefs.

چکیده
The diversity, frequency, and scale of human impacts on coral reefs are increasing to the extent that reefs are threatened globally. Projected increases in carbon dioxide and temperature over the next 50 years exceed the conditions under which coral reefs have flourished over the past half-million years. However, reefs will change rather than disappear entirely, with some species already showing far greater tolerance to climate change and coral bleaching than others. International integration of management strategies that support reef resilience need to be vigorously implemented, and complemented by strong policy decisions to reduce the rate of global warming.

Rethinking Ecosystem Resilience in the Face of Climate Change
Resilience is usually defined as the capacity of an ecosystem to absorb disturbance without shifting to an alternative state and losing function and services [1–3]. The concept therefore encompasses two separate processes: resistance—the magnitude of disturbance that causes a change in structure—and recovery—the speed of return to the original structure [4,5]—which are fundamentally different b...

This volume documents the severe consequences that climate change is predicted to have for coral reefs worldwide. While there are expected to be many impacts on coral reefs from climate change, the most immediate and dramatic are associated with rising sea temperatures and resultant mass coral bleaching events. These events have already been responsible for long-term damage to more than 16% of ...
متن کاملRehabilitation of Coral Reefs Exposed to Urbanization and Climate Change Impacts
Over 60% of Singapore’s coral reef habitat have been lost to decades of urban development pressure including land reclamation. Underwater visibility of less than 2m due to heavy sedimentation has restricted the healthy coral growth zone to the reef crest and upper 5m of the reef slope. Despite the impacts, coral species diversity has remained high together with predictable coral mass spawning e...
متن کاملEcological Processes and Contemporary Coral Reef Management
Top-down controls of complex foodwebs maintain the balance among the critical groups of corals, algae, and herbivores, thus allowing the persistence of corals reefs as three-dimensional, biogenic structures with high biodiversity, heterogeneity, resistance, resilience and connectivity, and the delivery of essential goods and services to societies. On contemporary reefs world-wide, however, top-...
متن کاملMarine reserves help coastal ecosystems cope with extreme weather.
Natural ecosystems have experienced widespread degradation due to human activities. Consequently, enhancing resilience has become a primary objective for conservation. Nature reserves are a favored management tool, but we need clearer empirical tests of whether they can impart resilience. Catastrophic flooding in early 2011 impacted coastal ecosystems across eastern Australia. We demonstrate th...
